What a story! It gives me chills, Amy. Women who hang with cranes are much cooler than women who swim with sharks, imo. Also, the cranes chose you. I don't think I'd want to be chosen by sharks.

I had no idea they were that tall. It would be an astounding story no matter what, but that intention! Okay, I gotta start doing that.

When she was young, the woman who later transcribed A Course in Miracles asked for a sign while looking out her window at night. Suddenly, all these stars fell from the sky. The next day, she read there had been a meteor shower, no biggee, all predicted. She became an atheist. So our minds can always find a sensible explanation for the miracle.

Yes, I hear you. It just felt so amazing. My son and I were both stunned by the whole thing. We kept talking about it in excitement for the rest of the day. It felt like a gift and a very clear confirmation. Even if they had been being fed, they hung out with us for so long. It was just amazing. I would certainly not want to be chosen by sharks! HAha.

Oh no, I'm not saying the sensible explanation was right. The miraculous one is. She just wasn't ready to hear it yet. 45 min! That's just not an ordinary angel visitation. That's getting to be one of the dang winged creatures themselves, in the middle of the purring, cooing, squawking huddle. I hope I get to hear that someday when you come visit me. If you also speak crow, I've got a murder for you ;-)

Oh yeah! I knew you were on the side of the miracle :) Haha. Of course I knew that :) I love crows. They are so smart. I would love to have a crow friend.

I used to call all my crows Russell but I think I need to change that, since the break-up.

Expand full comment

Oh man. That IS a good name for a crow. I like it when they say "Eh Eh". like they are being negative.

Expand full comment

So funny that I never even noticed that. And now they're doing it all the time.

And thanks again for giving me the 'miracle' confirmation that I should pursue my question about Mr. Brand the same day I woke up with 'Am I wrong about Russell?'

Cool! A lot of Sandhills summer up here and I've developed nodding acquaintances with some but never long conversations.

Nodding acquaintances is nice too. They are interesting creatures, for sure.

Looks like you made them into friends, in a way. Animals have unique personalities, curiosity and take interest in us if we are open to it. If we pay attention to them, they can tell us things.

You had a beautiful experience, exciting one too.

It was intense. And I did get the message :) It was exciting and beautiful .Thanks. Those sandhill cranes were "tuned in, man". Haha.

My sister used to have a couple of crows always hanging out near her balcony; when she still lived in San Diego. When ever I visited in the morning, for coffee, these two crows would come and land right in front of us on the table. She developed a friendship with them, one of them liked to take nuts right out of her hand.

The level of trust animals can develop is truly amazing.

I love this. I aspire to having crow friends. What a nice memory to have of this world. It's the little things like that which I love so much.

Wow, what an amazing story of your 'psychedelic without the psychedelics' experience Amy, proving once again that we receive what we ask for, if only we remember to ask!!

Expand full comment

It was exactly like that, well said.

And those red eyes are incredible. What a beauty of a bird!

I love that you and your son got to share this frickin' miracle together. You'll never forget it!!

I know! And I have been around sandhill cranes for YEARS. I have never seen that sort of behavior out of them. I have made a few males angry and had them come at me with their wings open, haha. But I adjusted my behavior since then. Pahaha. I reduce the call by about 50% and they get less mad.

hahahaha...less mad!!

My bride recalls a story where the staff ( she was director of nursing for a large home health group here in central Florida) and they had to leave by the back door at end of day, as two Sandhills took up guard duty at their front door. And yes, they are incredibly tall. Intimidating would be a good word.

Expand full comment

Hmm, they are strange creatures :) I wonder why they were doing that. I would have HAD to go out the front just to establish my dominance, but that's just me. *protect the face!*

HAha.

I understand though. I don't blame anyone. Tell her thank you for sharing that.

That's a fun story. Now I am interested to hear other people's sandhill crane stories. Thanks for sharing that. I am in the spacecoast area. I love your profile picture.

Fantastic! They are a bit scary. I’m thinking it took a lot to hold steady. Well met!

Expand full comment

Well, there was tension. Haha. Good thing I have elbows.

These sandhills don't necessarily like "your mama" jokes, do they?

Or anything that can be taken that way...

#ABeautifulConfirmationDay ...

I don't think they appreciate fast movements OR rude jokes. Haha. Nice hashtag :)

...just don't touch the babies...

Expand full comment

Yes, I agree. I knew not to touch. It was clear that we were into "being as close to each other as possible without actually touching." I wouldn't have breached that silent agreement. I was amazed that they left their baby right in front of me the whole time. I can still see him blinking up at me with his dark eyes in his bright baby face.

Ooof this enhances my personal desire to presence with Sandhill cranes. May your reflections bring great insight to your experience. Also reminds me of the book “Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold. 😉
